| Described by Eliot Fisk as "a young
guitarist of great refinement and sensitivity," Michael Partington
is one of the most exciting of the new generation of concert players. An
award-winning British guitarist, he has performed as a soloist and with
ensemble throughout the US and UK to unanimous critical praise. His debut
CD, 20th Century Guitar, released in 1998 for the Rosewood
Recordings label, prompted Classical Guitar magazine to notice his
"lyricism, intensity and clear technical command." This review
concluded by adding "Partington is an intelligent and articulate
guitarist, one to be welcomed without reservation." Tours to England
and Wales have included solo concerts in London, as part of the Grosvenor
Chapel Series, Bristol, Cardiff, Bognor Regis, Hastings, the English Organ
School in Somerset and others. US appearances have included the first solo
guitar concert at Benaroya's Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall, as well
as performances at Meany Theater in Seattle, feature concerts at the 1998
and 1999 Northwest Guitar Festivals, and others in California, Oregon,
Idaho and Washington. As a featured soloist he has appeared with the
Seattle Creative Orchestra, the Seattle Symphony Chorale, the Olympia
Youth Philharmonic, the Evergreen Festival String Quartet and the
University of Washington Wind Ensemble.
Mr. Partington has also worked with singers, guitarists, and other instrumentalists, including the eminent English organist Margaret Phillips, American soprano Carmen Pelton, and mezzo-soprano Louise Marley. He has appeared live on BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Bristol, Great Western Radio in Somerset, KING-FM and KUOW in Seattle, KZAZ in Bellingham, and KAOS in Olympia, WA. In 1997 Mr. Partington was the first-prize winner in both the Northwest Guitar Competition and the Capitol Area Youth Symphony concerto competition. He was also awarded the Helen Crowe Memorial Scholarship by the Seattle Musical Art Society. Mr. Partington was a prize-winner at the 1996 Portland Guitar Competition and has been awarded the prestigious Brechemin performance scholarship by the University of Washington. He has also been a semi-finalist in both the Karl Scheit competition in Vienna and the Guitar Foundation of America competition in Montreal, Quebec. Mr. Partington began playing guitar as a child growing up in Wales, and
studied in England with Jonathan Baker and Wendy Partridge. He moved to
the United States in 1991 and studied with Gary Bissiri before entering
the University of Washington to study with Steven Novacek from 1994 to
1998. He has also performed in Masterclasses for Eduardo Fernandez, David
Russell, Oscar Ghiglia, Scott Tennant, Roberto Aussel, Benjamin Verdery,
William Kanengiser and Michael Troester. When not touring Mr. Partington
makes his home in Seattle, where he also teaches at Rosewood Guitar. |
