Bach's cantata BWV 42 offers a rare treat: an instrumental sinfonia that is likely derived from a lost orchestral suite or Brandenburg-style concerto. Sharing the stage are a pair of Handel concerti grossi, a Purcell Fantasia for three violins and continuo, and Stravinsky's Danses concertates, a tuneful composition for chamber orchestra (later choreographed by Balanchine) that evokes the concerto grosso forms of the Baroque masters.
