As he approached his 50th birthday, following the composition of his great Passions, Bach created one of the most cheerful and beautiful of all his works, a cycle of six cantatas to be performed between December 25 and January 6. The Christmas Oratorio borrowed many of the best movements from some of Bach's earlier secular cantatas, refitting them with sacred texts. As much a holiday tradition in Europe as Handel's Messiah is in English-speaking countries, Bach's Christmas Oratorio is a moving and unforgettable musical experience.
