The sumptuous melodies of Borodin's famous Polovtsian Dances (heard in their rarely performed original form with full chorus) open a program devoted to magnificent Russian music. Judith Cohen, director of the Governor's Chamber Music Series in Olympia, lends her talents to Prokofiev's most famous piano concerto, a delightful showcase for both soloist and orchestra. The afternoon concludes with one of the greatest 20th century symphonies, the Shostakovich Fifth.
