| JOHANNES BRAHMS (1833-1897) Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68 — Intermission — FRANZ SCHUBERT (1797-1828) Mass No. 6 in E-flat major, D. 950 ORCHESTRA SEATTLE SEATTLE CHAMBER SINGERS George Shangrow conductor Johannes Brahms was 43 years old when he finally produced the first of his four great symphonies, an undisputed masterwork hailed as "Beethoven's Tenth." By the time Franz Schubert was 31, he had written nine symphonies and was only months away from an early death. In his final weeks the ever-prolific Schubert composed the Schwanengesang, the great C major string quintet, three piano sonatas, and his sixth and most ambitious setting of the traditional Latin Mass, a profound work in E-flat major that ranks among his greatest achievements. |
