| JOHN WILLIAMS (1932*) Children's Suite from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone MIKLÓS RÓZSA (1907-1995) Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 24 — Intermission — SERGEI PROKOFIEV (1891-1953) Alexander Nevsky Cantata, Op. 78 Svend Rřnning violin Emily Lunde mezzo-soprano ORCHESTRA SEATTLE SEATTLE CHAMBER SINGERS George Shangrow conductor The 2002-2003 OSSCS season opens with three works for the concert hall drawn from or later used in scores for the silver screen. John Williams has fashioned a nine-part suite from his music from the first Harry Potter movie, with each movement spotlighting a different group of instruments, culminating in a grand finale for full orchestra. Although better known for his scores to films such as Ben-Hur and Spellbound, Miklós Rózsa was also quite successful as a composer of music for the concert hall. His masterpiece is the violin concerto he wrote for Jascha Heifetz, a piece that so impressed director Billy Wilder that it inspired his screenplay for The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes. The afternoon concludes with Sergei Prokofiev's colorful and stirring choral cantata, Alexander Nevsky, derived from his 1938 score for Eisenstein's film of the same name. |
